Yeah, marketer has to earn their money. But I always think marketing are unproductive at best, at evil at worst. They use all those marketing tools to deceive the customers to buying something they don't need nor truly want. Wouldn't it be nice if every company just publish all unbiased data about their product and let custom make fully informed decision. Unfortunately, in business world, things only work this way.

Sometimes I have a doubt those bouquet bread really taste better than supermarket bread. Maybe it's just an illusion we create to cheat ourselves. We pay more, so it gotta taste better.

why we want uniqueness in bread? becuz it tastes better than mass produced bread from loblaws :-) however, if u value the uniqueness, u gotta pay for it......there's no societal reason for subsidising/protecting the uniqueness for uniqueness's sake

with good advertising and lots of money for media, u can condition people into believing anything :-)

I just don't get it, why we want uniqueness on everyday mundane stuff like bread. Arts require uniqueness, but for daily things practicality should overrule anything else.

I think with enough advertising and consumer education, we can re-condition the emotional connection with any other character, maybe even the plastic bag.

hey, your economic view is too anglo-american. in some european places, the uniqueness of a product from small business is valued more than the consistent quality. i think the bread example is such a dilemma. all you said about hygiene is undoubtedly correct. yet the character and emotional connection between the bread and the consumer seems to have got blocked by the plastic bag. but of course the whole ambience and purchasing experience is different. the whole thing about society becoming more civilised and adopting different practices and in the process took away the cultural aspect.... could it have been avoided and yet provide the same benefits from modern practices, definitely left for further debate..
