Macross Tetris v1.0

About Macross tetris
I like Tetris since I first played its original version in my old 80286 computer. Since then, I had played many variations of the game, and my favourite is Tetris Classic from Spectrum Holobyte.

Although this very version of Macross Tetris is fully working, it should have been called version 0.5, for it lacks many features in my original plan. I'll implement those additional features in the near future. I consider this applet my first real program in Java, and it is much more difficult than I thought. This game is my improved version of Tetris Classic's dual pit mode, and it cost me almost three months in the graphics design and implementation. Hope you will enjoy it.

Game Instruction
rules of the game
I don't think I'll need to explain the rules of Tetris here, for everybody should already know how to play this game. The scoring system of this game follows the original Tetris, in which your score grows as your level increases. Clearing more than one line at a time, dropping the block, and turning off the "Show Next" function can help you earn extra points.

main menu
When you first start the game, you will found yourself in the main menu. The dropping block in both left and right area indicates the actually speed of each level. You can change the starting lines and level by clicking on the buttons next to the areas. There are many game options, and they are all very self-explanatory. (i.e. If you choose "Send Rocks", the score of the loser will be added to the score of the winner.) The "faces" at the top of the screen are suppose to be the choice of computer or human player, but it is not functioning now. When you finish setting the options, press "Start" button to start the game.

highscores
After both players have finished the game, the highscore screen will display. Type in your name on the place that starts with a little red square and press "Enter" if you rank within the top ten. Press OK and return to the main menu.

Known Problems
  • There will not be any music even if you choose the "Sound Effect" option. It is normal, because I haven't added any audio effect in it yet.
  • The applet may blank out when it goes into or out of the main menu. Minimize the window and restore it to let the applet repaint itself.
  • The keys may not work when the applet is out of focus. Click the applet with your left mouse button to resume keyboard input.
  • Keep in mind that the highscore server is not very stable. Your score can be lost from time to time.
  • The small dropping blocks in the main menu may appear in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it doesn't affect the game play.
  • At extremely high levels, lose frames may occur. However, most people may not reach these levels under normal circumstances.

    Future Upgrades
  • computer player with 3 skill levels
  • background music and sound effect
  • more enhance visual effect
  • special blocks (bomb, shield, laser, canon, inverse, reverse)
