{"id":1667,"date":"2008-01-17T20:46:44","date_gmt":"2008-01-18T08:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/01\/17\/selling-innovation-to-the-cxo\/"},"modified":"2008-01-17T20:46:44","modified_gmt":"2008-01-18T08:46:44","slug":"selling-innovation-to-the-cxo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/01\/17\/selling-innovation-to-the-cxo\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling Innovation to the CxO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just come across a very interesting article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/br_sellinginnovation.pdf\" title=\"Selling Inovation\">Selling Innovation by Blast Radius<\/a>.\u00a0 I would like to share its insights with my fellow readers.\u00a0 In business world, every one knows the importance of innovation.\u00a0 Be innovate or get leave behind.\u00a0 If you are working in the startup, it is easy to try something new.\u00a0 It is what a start up is for after all.\u00a0 But if you are working in a big company, the corporate culture, tradition are usually on the way of innovation.\u00a0 The key to run an innovation project in a mature company is get the blessing of the CxO.\u00a0 This article gives 8 useful tips how to get CxO on your side.<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of innovations, incremental and disruptive.\u00a0 Incremental innovation is merely product improvement, even big company that on regular basis, so it is already part of the system.\u00a0 Disruptive innovation is a high risk, high reward venture.\u00a0 The key to run a successful disruptive innovation project to have the buy-in of the CxO and keep him interest through out the project.\u00a0 The key is to think like the CxO, address their concerns so that you can gain their trust and build up your credibility. \u00a0 Here are the 8 tips:<\/p>\n<p>1. Be passionate but balance.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t down play the risk factor.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t disclose enough risk to satisfy the CxO, he will invent some for you.<br \/>\n2. Measure creativity.\u00a0 Number is your best friend, it shows your achievement.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have a number ready in hand, don&#8217;t be afraid to invent some useful indicators.<br \/>\n3. Change course willing.\u00a0 If something is not going well, you better have a fix before others tell you how to fix the problem.<br \/>\n4. Giver direct answers, even when the answer is &#8220;I don&#8217;t know&#8221;.\u00a0 People smells dodge answers, it hurts your credibility more than a plain &#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<br \/>\n5. Ask for regular review.\u00a0 CxO hates surprises.\u00a0 They will kill your project if they don&#8217;t know what you are actually doing.<br \/>\n6. Don&#8217;t take all the credit.\u00a0 It is NOT your project.<br \/>\n7. Defend without being defensive.\u00a0 CxO is not cheerleader.\u00a0\u00a0 It is his job to challenge you, don&#8217;t take it personal.<br \/>\n8.
