{"id":1725,"date":"2008-02-25T07:15:18","date_gmt":"2008-02-25T19:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/02\/25\/some-obversations-about-indian-culture\/"},"modified":"2008-02-25T07:15:49","modified_gmt":"2008-02-25T19:15:49","slug":"some-obversations-about-indian-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/02\/25\/some-obversations-about-indian-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Some obversations about Indian culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seems I am writing about India in my blog every day.\u00a0 Well, I guess I am still experience the cultural shock.\u00a0 Everything happening around me seems so strange and foreign to me.\u00a0 Usually people will eventually get over with the cultural shock once they are familiar with the culture.\u00a0 There are many things I want to write about Indian culture and at the same time I don&#8217;t know where to begin.\u00a0 I will simply jot down a few observations I have over the weekend.\u00a0 I should know how to explain things more systemically once I finished reading my book on the anthropology of culture.<\/p>\n<p>I went to a zoo and safari on the weekend.\u00a0 Inside the safari, the bus driver help us take many photos since he is siting closely to the window.\u00a0 When we get off, I decided to give him some tips, 10 rupees.\u00a0 To make me quite unpleasant is that he bargain with me asking for more tips, 100 rupees.\u00a0 I am the only one in the bus giving him tips.\u00a0 He should be glad to have any tips at all.\u00a0 At the end I gave him 50 rupees, but I decided I will not give any more tips in India unless it is necesgary.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian concept of time is totally different than Canadian.\u00a0 When an Indian told you five minutes, it actually means anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.\u00a0 I gave up expecting any Indian becoming on time.\u00a0 I guess I just have to wait patiently.\u00a0 I have nothing else to do or place to go anyways.<\/p>\n<p>I went to M.G. road on the weekend.\u00a0 M.G. road is kinda like Robson Street in Vancouver, with lots of tourist store.\u00a0 On the street people trying to sell things to you are everywhere.\u00a0 Most of them sell cheesy key chains, handcraft souvenirs.\u00a0 There is one guy trying to sell wall size Indian map to tourist.\u00a0 That guy must be out of his mind.\u00a0 No tourist want to carry a cheap poster size map back home.\u00a0 Moreover it takes lost work to keep the map free off winkles.\u00a0 I wonder who will buy an Indian map during travel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems I am writing about India in my blog every day.\u00a0 Well, I guess I am still experience the cultural shock.\u00a0 Everything happening around me seems so strange and foreign to me.\u00a0 Usually people will eventually get over with the cultural shock once they are familiar with the culture.\u00a0 There are many things I &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/02\/25\/some-obversations-about-indian-culture\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Some obversations about Indian culture<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"lc_iscn_info":[],"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[50,175],"class_list":["post-1725","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-_scribble","tag-india","tag-culture"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
