{"id":1800,"date":"2008-04-21T08:14:52","date_gmt":"2008-04-21T20:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/04\/21\/hampi-the-hidden-jewel-of-india\/"},"modified":"2008-04-21T08:14:52","modified_gmt":"2008-04-21T20:14:52","slug":"hampi-the-hidden-jewel-of-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horace.org\/blog\/2008\/04\/21\/hampi-the-hidden-jewel-of-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Hampi &#8211; the hidden jewel of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160845&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-f.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/n682650268_1160845_3668.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Ruin of ancient market\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hampi is probably one of the hidden treasure of India.\u00a0 It was the capital of the largest Indian kingdom in 14th century.\u00a0 It is glorious day, its has over half a million population.\u00a0 Then the Muslim rulers came and destroy everyone.\u00a0 Now it is an ancient huge ruin covering an area of 75 km square with just a few small farm villages.\u00a0 Hampi is far away from any major travel route so it is not well known to most travelers.\u00a0 Hampi only got a paragraph in my tourist book and a couple pages in the Lonely Planet.\u00a0 With its status as a world heritage site and massive preservation project on the way, I think it will transform itself into the second biggest attraction in India after Taj Mahal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160787&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-268.ll.facebook.com\/photos-ll-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160787_8929.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Trees and rice field\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160802&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-c.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160802_4232.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Ruins of ancient market\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160803&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-d.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160803_4522.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Water thank in the market\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u00a0    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160787&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get to Hampi, we have to take an overnight train from Bangalore.\u00a0 Riding trains in India is quite an experience.\u00a0 Although we are riding first class, things are not quite right.\u00a0 The cabin is OK, at least we got clean sheet and pillow case.\u00a0 The toilet is a hole go straight down to the tracks.\u00a0 You can feel the wind when coming up when you are doing your business.\u00a0 You are not allow to go to toilet when the train stops at train station, otherwise what comes out of you will stay on the tracks.\u00a0 The train door is not locked, so you can stick your head out and get some fresh air.\u00a0 It seems quite scary at first, but after a while you use to the open door, you will find it very enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160787&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-268.ll.facebook.com\/photos-ll-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160787_8929.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Trees and rice field\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160789&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-268.ll.facebook.com\/photos-ll-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160789_9434.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Ox cart waiting to cross the rail crossing.\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160790&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-268.ll.facebook.com\/photos-ll-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160790_9696.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"The train door is not locked.  I can stick my head out and enjoy the ride.\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The natural beauty of Hampi is stunning.\u00a0 The whole area is scattered with rocks mountains.\u00a0 The ancient Indian build their temples and palace using local materials by cutting the stones.\u00a0 There are over 300 temples in the area, most of them are destroyed and deserted, only a few survive.\u00a0 The scale of the palace, the market, public bath, the royal bath is very impression.\u00a0 Every building is connected by an aqua duct system.\u00a0 The canal built in the ancient times are still used as water supplies by villagers.\u00a0 The most spectacular view is the sun rise temple on the highest rock mountain.\u00a0 We woke up 5a.m. to climb the mountain.\u00a0 Unfortunately we were too slow and missed the sun rise by 15 minutes.\u00a0 However, the view on top is so beautiful that it still worth the 600 steps hike up the ancient stairs carved out from the rocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160827&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-d.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160827_8539.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Ruin of the palace\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160840&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-a.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160840_2183.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Wake up at 5a.m. to watch sun rise\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160860&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-e.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160860_8434.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"Water temple.\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?pid=1160869&amp;id=682650268\" class=\"tt-facebook-photo\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos-f.ak.facebook.com\/photos-ak-sf2p\/v234\/59\/107\/682650268\/t682650268_1160869_1752.jpg?w=474\" alt=\"The royal water tank.\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t plan ahead of time, but the weekend we visit Hampi is also the birthday of the monkey god.\u00a0 There is a big festival going on in the only functional temple in the area.\u00a0 Villagers nearby all come to the temple to celebrate.\u00a0 Indian festival is very interesting.
