This afternoon I had a good time with Kenny touring toy shops in Richmond. He is one of my friends whom I known in the most weird place. I met him in arcade and somehow became good friends, probably due to our love towards toys and anime. Well, he is more otaku than me. At least I don’t play japanese games nor self learn japanese just for ACG. We collect different toy series. He like super robot, saint saiya and I like military style mecha. Gundam is the common language between us. He is probably the only person I know in real life knows more about Gundam than myself. It is always a pleasant to see him. We can just talk about toys, anime and games for hours. Everytime he will show me Japanese hobbies magainzes. I already read the highlights from online scan, but it is a different kind of joy to read it on paper. We can even talk about each picture in details. I wonder how long we will continue be toy lovers. I guess I will keep collecting toy as a hobby financially permits. Toys defintely make nice display pieces. Unlike old fashion collection items just lay still, toys can be arranged to different poses. Unlike collection items only for decoration, toys have deep sub-culture background.

My random thoughts of the day.
TTF friends
Tonight I went out to have dinner with friends in the TTF forum. One of them is visiting Vancouver from LA, so we have a small group of five people come out to meet each other. I discuss various issuses (a.k.a. blow water) with them in the forum for a long time but it is the first time meeting some of them. I heard the group in HK come out regularly and many become close friends. I am surprise to see friendship first start in the internet and flourish in real life. The TTF forum is not just a website, it is a community. People go there for various reason, some just hang around and leave, but many more choose to stay, make it their home in the cyber world. I become part of this community and accustom the people there. This kind of community services absolute no purpose except a group of bored people get together to have fun. Although it may sound quite unproductive, but I think the sense of belong is one of the key that attracts people.
Manager meat ball
This is a rumour at work about an unpopular manager becomes a meat ball. This guy is probably the worst manager in the company. He is mean, pressure his sub-ordinates hard and worst of all he never gives credits to those work under him. The division this manager belongs to is closing down, no new project in the pipeline. The executives try to place him into other divisions. Apparently no team wants him to be their boss so every project team rejected his placement. He has become a human meat ball bouncing between divisions. I heard that the upper management decided to let go of him. If he couldn’t find a place to take him in a few months, he will be layoffed. When we heard this rumour, a girl in my team cheered with joy. She suffered under his management and now it is the pay back time. As a manager, you can’t make everyone likes you, but at least don’t make everyone hates you. You may look good in front of your boss by sacrificing the people down below. But you have to remeber what goes around comes around. Rule with an iron grip may work for a while but eventually it will back fire and burn yourself.
Two worlds
I was talking to the co-op students about their plans after graduations in the afternoon. The company hired the brightest students from both UBC and SFU. I gave some advice to one of the guy who havn’t make up his mind. He planned to study master in UBC. I encouraged him apply to top schools in the States, I think he could make it. I was like them 6 years ago. I used to dream alot about the future. Tonight I had a drink with an old friend visiting Vancouver. He is on the other end of the spectrum compare to the co-ops. He is working for CN Rail. His career is smooth, riskless and well-planned. All he need to do is wait for his boss to retire and then move up the ladder. Repeat this process a few times and he will be the chief engineer of CN Rail. CN Rail didn’t hire many people for many years, so there is a hugh age gap between him and his boss, his boss’ boss, etc. He can envision where he will be in 10 years when everyone above him retired. Chielf engineer of CN Rail makes a very decent living, but not glorious. Nevertheless, he is an engineering manager but he makes considerly less than a grunt engineer in PMC. I ask myself which of the two worlds I belong to. Can I still pursuit my dream like the co-ops or should I settle down for a plain simple life like my old friend?
Golf
Last time I picked up my golf clubs was almost a year ago. Today, I went to driving range with colleagues in the lunch hour. We greped hot dogs for a quick lunch and pratice a bucket of golf balls. One of the colleague is new to golf, so the other colleague who has more experience became his golf instructor. I learnt golf a few years ago, but my swing is pretty bad due to lack of practice. I was watching their golf lecture. I found that there are lots of things one have to take care of in a golf swing. From how to holding club, where to stand, coordinate the body movement, do the follow through. I think all those technically details of a good golf swing is not as important as having the right state of mind. Golf swing is something very zen. You can only make a perfect swing if you have peace in your mind. The more you want to hit the ball, the worse your swing will be. Just relax, let your body guide your swing naturally. In today’s session, I hit a few balls straight over 200 yards with 3 wood. However, my problem is lack of consistency. The balls just flew different directions most of the time. I want to pick up golf lessons again. Be a decent golf player is one of my goal.
