Apple and Creative

I read in the news about the lawsuit of Creative suiting Apple over some user interface pattern related to iPod. In the article, it is interesting to learn back in 2001, before Apple release its first iPod, it wanted to license the hardware from Creative. Back then Apple was the new comer to the infant mp3 player market, while Creative was in fact the market leader. At the end Creative cannot reach an agree with Apple and Apple decided to design its own hardware. The rest is history. I am sure the executives at Creative must be really regret about his decision to blow the deal or executive s slipped this golden oppertunity already let go. Sometimes looking back into history, you would make a different decision if you know what will turn out is different. The problem is, how can you know what’s lying ahead of you?

Ordination

I attended a very rare event tonight. My friend is ordinated as a Catholic priest. A Catholic priest cannot get marry, so the importance of ordination is equivalent to his wedding. Actually it is even more important, become a priest also marks the end of the many years studies in seminary school. Ordination is indeed a wedding plus a Ph.D. gradulation. The ceremony is held in a church sharing the same name as my friend, what a coincident. I think almost every priest in the Vancouver archdiocese had come. The mass is celebrated by the archbishop. It is much longer than a normal marriage mass, it has many more rituals. It is a big event for the church too. The last time they have an ordination there is almost thirty years ago. The ordination followed by reciption with food and wine , as well as photo session, just like a normal wedding. There is one thing extra though, the newly ordinated priest gave us special blessing. I don’t have any other friends who has a vocation call. Probably this is a once in a life time interesting experience to attend an ordination of a friend. The lack of priest is one of the biggest problem of the Catholic Church. The sacrifice of being a priest is hugh, you simplily can’t touch woman for the rest of your life. On one hand I admire the determination for those who choose the life of celebrancy, on the other hand, I seriously doubt whether their have a normal mind.

Primary schoolmate

Tonight I went out to have a drink with two old old friends. They are my primary schoolmates. One of them used to be my best buddy in primary school, although I havn’t keep in touch with him for a almost 5 years. He visited Vancouver for a few days after attending a wedding in SF. The other is a girl living in Vancouver. I was not that close to her in primary school. Actually, I don’t really know any girls back in primary school. We become more friend after I moved to Vancouver and through another friend visiting Vancouver quite often. I didn’t contact her a couple of years either. I guess I am just too lazy in keeping in touch with my friends if they don’t have ICQ or MSN. I am lazy in writing emails these days, just don’t what to write sometimes. It has been 17 years since we graduated from primary school, really a long time. We didn’t talk about many gold old days, since we don’t want to bored the guys’ girlfriend. We just chat like good friends on various topics, catching up with our recent life. Havn’t keep in touch actively for many years, I guess it will take a while to warm up our friendship to talk more hearty stuff. Maybe due to the girlfriend is tagging along, we won’t have any chance to talk about it.

Youtube

I have wasted the whole afternoon watching clips on Youtube. I have been watching clips on this website for a few months, but never look at it seriously. The video clips I watched mostly are links posted to various forums. This website is popular for short and funny video clips. The recent “Bus Uncle” event became a news all over the world, even reported BBC, is mainly thanks to this website. The hit rate of that video clip ranked number 2 this month and generates attentions to the mainstream media. I browsed through the all time top 100 clips, many of them are really hilarious. The type of clips I like most are spoofs, which make fun famous TV shows or movies scenes. Youtube is the number one video website, leaving google video, iTune or Real far behind. Real really missed this golden oppertunity. They have the right technology and already in the game since the dot.com day. They just couldn’t get around to offer free to all video streaming service. Could Youtube successfully reach IPO, or would it be an acquisition target? The development is interesting to follow.
